Both the Muslim Students' Associations of Eastern Michigan and Michigan State seem to be on a roll this semester with their events.
MSU recently held a discussion on the recent bills dealing with immigration and 'administrative body of foreign laws' which have been sweeping the nation.
House Bill No. 4769, proposed by Representative Dave Agema, seems to take aim at Muslims and although the knee-jerk phrase 'Shariah Law' is not used in the bill's wording, the implication is there.
Kanza Khan, an MSU sophomore with a focus in International Relations and Psychology organized the event and is reported as saying:
[The bill] basically tries to ban the foreign laws we practice in the American court system. It was sponsored by David Agema and many other representatives around Michigan, mostly from Oakland,” said Khan “So basically the event talks about awareness of what the bill is trying to do and also what Sharia law is, which is basically the Islamic law. And what the Muslim minority community can do about this bill and how we can make sure that the bill doesn’t get passed.”
It would be beneficial if the components of shariah law were further explored by non-Muslims and conveyed to the masses without bias.
The majority of American Muslims know Shariah Law to be exponentially less harmful than non-Muslim Americans believe it to be, and have chosen to live in America so that they may practice their religion freely.
