MSP trooper wounded during east side gunfight

A veteran Michigan State trooper was shot in the leg Monday morning during an exchange of gunfire between police officers and robbery suspects they were hunting. He was transported by EMS to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he is recovering.

The shooting took place at about 4:45 a.m. this morning in the 5300 block of Townsend Street near Van Dyke and Gratiot Avenue on Detroit’s east side.

The MSP was assisting the Detroit Police in tracking men suspected of participating in several armed robberies over the weekend. Reportedly, the men had impersonated police officers.

At some point, the suspects ran into a house and began shooting at police. That’s when the trooper was hit.

He was listed in temporary serious condition this morning, but is expected to make a complete recovery.

Police arrested two of the men, including the shooter.

They are searching for two more suspects, who may be hiding in the house or nearby.
