MSNBC's Ed Schultz: GOP not raising minimum wage is racist

For some liberals, everything is racist. For MSNBC's Ed Schultz, the GOP is racist because a bill to raise the minimum wage was blocked in a Democratic-controlled Senate, Red Alert Politics reported Thursday. According to Schultz, the GOP not raising the minimum wage is “every bit as racist as comments made by Cliven Bundy and Donald Sterling.”

“I think not raising the minimum wage is a racist policy,” Schultz declared. “Standing up, making the case that people of color in this country do not deserve a living wage is a racist policy. There’s a lot of different ways to prove racism in America. Not providing a livable wage for Americans hurts African-Americans.”

Of course, that's not the only thing that proves Republicans are racists, according to the bombastic Schultz. He also cited reduction in food stamps, attempts to repeal Obamacare and cuts to Medicaid and Medicare as other policies he claims display racism.

“It’s not just the minimum wage,” he said. “Republican policies, look at what they do, they hurt all people of color with their policies. … Not raising the minimum wage is just the latest in a long line of Republican policies that hurt minorities across the board in this country.”

A measure to raise the minimum wage was blocked in the Senate earlier in the week, having failed to receive the required 60 votes to advance. The measure failed with a 54-42 vote, with one Republican -- Bob Corker of Tennessee -- joining Democrats. Senate Majority Leader HArry Reid, D-Nev., voted against the bill so that he can reintroduce it later.

Republicans say that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour will hurt businesses and cost jobs. Democrats, apparently, don't care, and are looking to bolster their sagging election chances with anything they can use to castigate Republicans as mean, evil, racist and cruel.

In February, the nonpartisan CBO said that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 as Democrats want to do would reduce total employment by about 500,000 workers, or 0.3 percent. It seems Democrats are willing to see half a million jobs lost for political gain.

Moreover, the number of people making the minimum wage only account for 1.1 percent of the total workforce, which, thanks to Obama and the Democrats, continues to shrink. Demagogues like Schultz would have us believe that practically everyone in the country except for a few billionaires earn the minimum wage.

Liberals argue that no one can live on the minimum wage, but fail to point out that the minimum wage is used primarily for entry-level workers. They also fail to point out that if the minimum wage is increased, small businesses will either have to raise prices or lay workers off. As Jim Geraghty points out, while workers may appreciate the extra cash, the situation with regards to income inequality will not have changed at all, and he adds, getting that first entry level job may, in fact, become more difficult.

But according to Schultz, it's racist to consider those things.
