The main criteria for a vehicle to be family friendly is the ability to seat seven people. Out of the twenty vehicles that are listed; sixteen of them are SUVs.
They are the Mitsubishi Outlander ES 2WD, Kia Sorento LX FWD, Hyundai Santa Fe GLS FWD, Nissan Pathfinder S, Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot LX, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9, Dodge Durango SXT, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex SE, Subaru Tribeca, GMC Acadia, Nissan Armada SV, Buick Enclave.
The SUV with the lowest fuel economy on this list is the Nissan Armada with 13 mpg city, but you would have to test the vehicle out yourself and compute the real time fuel economy just driving in the city. Just divide the total miles traveled by the gallons of fuel that you consume and you get the fuel economy. Most new vehicles already calculate the fuel economy for you.
As you know, this is only a select number of SUVs that MSN has classified as family friendly.
There are more SUVs out there that will fit your family more. Are you going to be towing jetskis, boats, travel trailers or anything else with this SUV, even if it is on a seasonal basis? How about installing a bicycle or roof rack? Do you plan to go off road with the SUV, camp, drive to the sports complexes for games, etc? You need an SUV that will stand up to all that, go through with regularly scheduled maintenance and be reliable even in the worst weather conditions.
