The folks at Mrs. P's Magic Library are going all out today to celebrate Read Across America Day.
The event is sponsored by the National Education Association, and is a national campaign to promote literacy and reading.
For Read Across America Day, Mrs. P (actress Kathy Kinney) will read to students at the Walt Disney Elementary School in Burbank, Calif. in her role as an honorary board member for Everybody Wins! USA.
Mrs. P's Magic Library is a Portland-based website that offers a virtual storytime for kids -- along with free activities and resources for parents and teachers.
Earlier this year, MrsP.com announced the winners of its first annual "Be a Famous Writer" contest. Today, the two grand-prize winning stories become available for free on iTunes. The stories -- "Pretty Princess & Funky Frog" and "Spattered Mud and Crushed Petals" -- are bundled together, with a total running time of 13:50. The stories were written by 8-year-old Gabrielle Fuller and 12-year-old Isabella Penola, respectively.
Their stories will appear in Mrs. P's Magic Library later this month, too, along with original illustrations by Portland artist Robin E. Kaplan and read by Mrs. P, herself.
MrsP.com also released a new video promoting Read Across America, and the release of its contest winners stories on iTunes:
