They are being called the team to beat: and with good reason.
Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby is the team with the name that makes you giggle and the hits that make you feel sorry for the opposing team. Fleet of foot and heavy in hip, the boys with the hearts on their shirt will steal your lunch money on the track and then buy you a beer after the bout.
Your Mom has done the one thing this season that all of the best teams in the world have done at one point: They played everyone possible. It didn’t matter what rank, or if ranked at all. Men’s or women’s teams. Strict MRDA rules or charity bout where fans could buy rule changes and curve balls for the skaters. In their home town or traveling across the country.
Watching Your Mom (giggle) skate is mind blowing.
Gotham Girls Roller Derby is untouchable in the world of WFTDA. Most of us were convinced that there could not be a team in the world that could beat them. Ever.
Then Your Mom came to town (giggle).
In a closed scrimmage Your Mom beat Gotham. Your Mom pulled MULTIPLE track cuts on BONNIE THUNDERS. I don’t know about the rest of the derby world, but the East Coast was ablaze with Tweets and texts from those within the walls of the scrimmage while it was happening. The giants of WFTDA have been defeated.
But that means the men of MRDA have giants to overcome this weekend.
Tony Muse. Twinkle Toes. B Stang. Dirty Larry. Sugar Boots. Little Bunny Foo Q. Cleveland Stever.
These are names that I do not need to describe. None of the Your Mom roster needs to be described. Their skating is perfection, their team work is effortless, their blocking is rock solid and their jamming is downright magical.
In a few hours, Your Mom will take the track against the Deep Valley Belligerents to kick off the 2013 MRDA Championships in Sioux City, Iowa. Your Mom is planning on not only keeping their title, but re-establishing themselves as the monsters of men’s roller derby. This will be an amazing tournament to watch!
I have had a blast learning about each team and writing about them in these preview articles. Now for the good stuff: let the games BEGIN!
