Mr. Wok is a Pan Asian hidden gem

Mr. Wok Pan Asian restaurant is located not too far from Weissgerber's Gasthaus, in the back end of a strip mall. Silvernail Plaza, to be exact. The sign is plain, the interior is spare, and...it's in a strip mall.

Don't let this fool you, however. It's very well worth the drive from Milwaukee.

The service can be a little uneven,  especially if you go in a group larger than four people.

They do have bubble tea, and Thai Iced Coffee and Thai Iced Tea, both of which are excellent.

If you get appetizers, make very sure to get at least one order of Malaysian Roti Chanai ($3.25). This bread is a soft, fluffy folded-up pan-fried disk that's meant to be torn apart and dipped in the accompanying curry-based sauce. It's a cross between a croissant, a puffy layered tortilla and Pita bread, and it tastes amazing. The Fresh Spring Rolls ($4.10) and the Thai Tofu Tod ($2.95) are also excellent meal starters.

The menu is varied, and includes staples such as Fried Rice, Lo Mein, Sesame Chicken ($8.95 - get it extra spicy), and Curry dishes. However, the best dishes come from the Pan Asian section of the menu. Thai and Malaysian specialties that are rare to find on any Asian menu in Milwaukee are featured here alongside the Chinese dishes.

The Beef Kang Dang ($8.95) is a flavorful dish, full of Curry and coconut milk. It is stir fried, and the vegetables are tender. The heat is mild.

Boh Loh Pah ($8.75) comes with a choice of beef, chicken, pork or shrimp. The Pork version is full of tender chunks of pork, mushrooms and  bamboo shoots. The garlic and the fresh chili give it a great kick, and the addition of Basil leaves lend an unusual flavor that lingers on the tongue.

The Rendang Chicken ($8.75) is a must if you like Lemongrass dishes. The chicken is slowly simmered over low heat with Lemongrass, coconut milk and chili paste. It's hot, yet creamy because of the coconut milk, and the portion is more than enough for a meal and some leftovers. The leftovers are even better the next day. It also comes in a Beef version.

There is a luncheon buffet that features different specialties each weekday. It's $5.80, and goes from 11 AM until 2 PM.

I keep reading about this place, but haven't made it over there yet. Beef Rendang is a favorite dish of mine, so I hope to try this place soon. Does the lunch buffet focus on Chinese food, or does it also have Malaysian and other cuisines represented?
