Mr. Vick and the HSUS

Pit Bull Lovers Photos  "Pit Bull"

Michael Vick is probably the worst person in the world of pet owners at this point in time. He did horrible things to innocent dogs and did it for many years. The punishment he put those poor dogs through is just indescribable. The talk now is should he actually be able to go back to the life he knew and play football? Most pet lovers think he needs to be strung up and beaten just as he had done to the dogs. “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”, as the saying goes. Well us pet lovers also need to look at this, he did serve his time. Even though most of the pet lovers do not believe this was long enough, including myself. With this said he did serve time and now is just trying to get back to doing the only thing he knows; football.

No (c)  Michael Vick

Michael Vick was a great player. He was good at what he did and that was playing football. Should he be able to play again? Everyone is asking that question. Most people feel he should be able to play but not have it handed to him. Some feel he should probably not play at all or start in the overseas teams and then migrate back over here. Some think Michael should play in the new football league they are looking at starting. Either way the man that can play football will once again play football, no matter how many people protest it. I, myself, am not happy with what he did but I cannot state my opinions of what he should or should not do. I believe everyone deserves a second chance. He is willing to earn that second chance; therefore we as pet lovers and human beings should give him that.

The National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell has stated that Michael Vick can return to play football providing he actually does as he stated in his personal transition plan he gave to the NFL. Michael Vick must work with and help with putting a stop to dog fighting. In one of his plans he stated he will help the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) by helping at-risk youths in community-based programs to not get involved in dog fighting. He has to help teens and people see that what he put dogs through is very wrong and what he did others should not do.

The HSUS dog fighting team has really been cracking down on dog fighting since all this has started with Mr. Vick. They have helped set up raids, examine the dogs caught, and help with the court cases with the evidence they help collected. They have also started End Dog Fighting programs in Atlanta and Chicago. These programs are taking other ex-dog fighters and having them help to teach others. They are having them help with teaching the proper ways to train and interact with dogs. They are taking the at-risk youths and setting a great example. Michael Vick can also be a part of that team and hopefully he will.

At the HSUS website you can see the team and their pictures. Each team member has their own Pit Bull for their advocacy. There is the lead trainer and a HSUS Pit Bull advocate, Jeff Jenkins and his dog, Lola. There is Sean Moore, a HSUS advocate, and his dog, Jigga. There is also Anthony Pickett, another HSUS advocate, and his dog, Nino. Then there are three others that are a part of the team with their dogs. They are Peanut and his dog, Tiger, Mike and his dog, Blood, and Anthony and his dog, Tyson.

    Let Vick Play!

Vick deserves a job but not among the elite of the NFL who act as role models to children. Further, he has every reason to play the part of a "former" animal abuser who is filled with remorse but, frankly, I think the only thing he's sorry about is that he was caught at all. It's certainly not the fault of anyone - or any dog for that matter - that all Vick knows how to do is play football. Prior to entering his plea, he certainly lied well. Perhaps he should try his hand at acting because he sure has fooled even the national advocacy groups who are now looking to capitalize upon his fame... oops, I mean willing to forgive him.

Here is my question. If Vick is so remorseful, would he have voluntarily quit dogfighting by now had ne not been caught and sent to prison. Not very likely. His only remorse is that he got caught, he lost money, and that now he has to waste his time fulfilling his deal with the court. If you look at the early articles, HSUS was all for Vick going to prison forever and not ever playing ball again. Amazing how their position changes when they recognize Vick as a cash cow that can bring them in donations for their other legislative agendas (anti-hunting, anti-meat, anti-pet ownership)

Nice article, Dena. Thanks for putting a non-spin view out there, with interest.

I find it grossly offensive that humans use animals for game. However, it boils down to the basic food chain and those who are rich, powerful and have half a brain, use animals for sport. Consider what is done to greyhounds and horses . . . that being said, Paul (the guy of the bible) used to feed Christians to the lions until he was converted. We have to hope that as human beings, we are all capable of change and preferrably for the better. We have to hope that Vick has learned a valuaable lesson. Sometimes money cannot fix everything. He now has a spectacular opportunity to not only regain his life back doing what his God given talent is, but also to set an example for everyone. Let's hope that Michael can do the right things!

Vick deserves the same second chance he gave the animals he beat, drowned, electrocuted and hanged. Evil man.

Hello everyone - Yes I have to agree with the most of you. I really had a hard time trying to write this as we Examiners have to write an article for everyone and not so much opinion based. I tried but had to rewrite several times. I think he needs to be punished severely but on the same note if he can prove himself to play football then let him play football. Yes NFL players are role models but if he can just be a role model for one kid to get out of dog fighting then that's one kid and several dogs saved. The HSUS dog fighting team is mostly ex-dog fighters that have turned good and are trying to teach the community to better treat their dogs.
Michael Vick may not have stopped until he got caught, he may not have been sorry until now, but if he is truely sorry or not his job now is to work with the kids and explain what he did is wrong and try to turn kids around from dog fighting. I don't really care what his day job is but I just hope he can change the lives of some children.

I hate Michael Vick. And I hate dog fighting.

This whole situation has me so torn. Clearly what Vick did was reprehensible. No one disputes that. But since catching him there has been a great crackdown on dog fighting than ever before in this country. This is a great trend, and saving countless dogs.

I have no idea if Vick is sincere in his efforts (my guess would be no, and this is just an attempt to rehabilitate his reputation). But regardless it has to be a good thing if it can help even one animal suffer less.

Frank - I hear you! I am torn by this as well. This was a hard article to write for me due to being very opinionated about dog abuse. I don't feel he would have stopped before being caught but he did get caught and now he has to do as he has to do. Like you said if it even just helps one dog then its good. I just hope he helps the kids out there to see this is wrong and help to be a better role model to them for it.

Vick is forevermore the dog fighter and no amount of legal obligation to society can erase that stain so copious with blood and agony of multitudes of helpless dogs (and animals due to bait training) on his hands. Dogs that had no choice. People do have choices. How tragic-a dog fighter for America's role model; and people wonder why America is so full of violence. These "lectures" Vicks is doing-I feel it's just a con job to get his old millions of dollars a year job with NFL. Do a little song and dance and play ball. Keep in mind Michael Vick LIED to law enforcement and to the public initially when he was charged with dog fighting. "I am innocent and I will clear my good name" I distinctly remember him saying. Only after his buddies turned him in he changed his tune--so I feel Vick is a pathological liar. He's been torturing and killing dogs for YEARS, including throwing in family pets into dog fighting rings because he thought it was funny, per the USDA report on Vick. Yep-Vick thin

BOYCOTT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES!!! Them patronizing Vick tells me a lot about their organization.
At least PETA dumped Vick as soon as they seen the USDA report that Vick threw in family pets into dog fighting rings because the thought it was funny to watch.

  • SPE-Dena 2 years ago

OK - One thing the HSUS. Why ban them? So what if they are using Vick to try to help the dogs from dog fighting. I say use him as he used the dogs. I understand it was a great stand for PETA and the ASPCA has made their comments about him. They are hopeful about what he will be doing, but!
The HSUS is the only one to try and use him to better dogs. I don't see PETA or ASPCA out there getting these laws harder for the dogfighting. I don't see $5000 rewards posted from any other organization about dogfighting, but the HSUS does. The HSUS is doing good things no matter what some people may think. They also have other ex-dog fighters that are working with communities in high-dogfighting areas that are teaching people how to work with their dogs. The proper techniques to train their dog for pleasure not fighting. They are trying to better the places for dogs and their owners. We all should take charge like them instead of sitting at home doing nothing but complain about it.
