'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' No. 1 at U.S. box office; 'Need for Speed' is No. 3

DreamWorks Animation's "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" rose from No. 2 to No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending March 16, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on March 16, "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" (with Ty Burrell as the voice of genius dog Mr. Peabody) had $21.2 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending March 16, 2014.

Two other movies opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on March 14, 2014:

Walt Disney Pictures' action flick "Need for Speed" (starring Aaron Paul) debuted at No. 3, with $17.8 million in ticket sales.

Lionsgate's "Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club" (starring Nia Long and Tyler Perry) debuted at No. 5, with $8.3 million in ticket sales.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending March 16, 2014:

1. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" — $21.2 million

2. "300: Rise of an Empire" — $19.1 million

3. "Need for Speed" — $17.8 million

4. "Non-Stop" — $10.6 million

5. "Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club" — $8.3 million

Also noteworthy: Warner Bros' Pictures' "Veronica Mars," the first major-studio movie released on VOD and in cinemas on the same day, opened in 291 theaters and had an impressive $2 million in ticket sales, which resulted in the movie debuting at No. 10.

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on March 14, 2014:

  • "Bad Words" — $120,000 from six theaters
  • "Le Week-End" — $45,000 from three theaters
  • "Art of the Steal" — $38,500 from 60 theaters
  • "Enemy" — $18,000 from one theater
  • "On My Way" — $11,100 from one theater
  • "Big Men" — $9,000 from one theater
  • "Teenage" — $8,000 from one theater
  • "The Retrieval" — $6,400 from one theater
  • "The Word" — $3,700 from one theater
