Mozilla's Firefox: At risk again

Late yesterday (28 Jul 2009) Mozilla posted an alert on their security blog. The alert pertains to all current versions of Firefox. At issue is a new vulnerability where the URL can be spoofed when a new tab or window is opened.

This could happen when visiting a malicious Web site as mentioned in the post:

“If a user visits a page hosting this malicious code, a new window or tab can be opened with a faked URL. There is no way of determining if the URL is authentic. This could result in the user disclosing confidential information to the malicious site, known as a phishing attack.”

Mozilla further mentions how to cope with the situation until a fix is released:

“Users can mitigate this vulnerability by only sharing confidential information with websites that were opened from a bookmark, a trusted source, or by manually opening a new tab or window and entering a URL.”

Final Word

I have no doubt Mozilla is attacking this problem with everything they have. Their track record is two days or less to fix problems. Let’s see how they do this time.

Sheeze! I just got 3.5.1 and now I gotta do it again! Good thing my browser isn't as vulnerable than FireFox! Maybe I should just uninstall it untill they get it all straightened out?

Trust Secunia and Mozilla. Others aren't as responsive.
