The 49ers starting quarterback position has no questions, but everything after Colin Kaepernick has holes. Here is a further look at the the quarterback situation for the 49ers:
Under contract in 2014: Colin Kaepernick and McLeod Bethel-Thompson
Free Agent: Colt McCoy
The 49ers do not have uncertainty at the quarterback position behind Colin Kaepernick on the depth chart. With Bethel-Thompson the only other quarterback under contract, being the reserve quarterback has been a revolving door.
From Scott Tolzien, Seneca Wallace, B.J. Daniels and John Skelton, the 49ers have released and tried out several players to fill the quarterback depth chart. Daniels is currently on the practice squad of the Seattle Seahawks. Bethel-Thompson was claimed off the waivers before being placed on the practice squad after being cut.
San Francisco should be drafting a quarterback as well as signing another in free agency to provide competition. Bethel-Thompson was signed to contract when the season ended. It doesn't appear that Colt McCoy will be returning as he is an unrestricted free agent.
Trent Baalke has six draft picks to use from rounds four through seven. Using a mid-round to late-round pick on a quarterback would be reasonable in order to find a backup to develop.
The 49ers presumably will want an athletic quarterback who has an arm and can run when needed. A few draft targets could include Tajh Boyd, Stephen Morris and Connor Shaw, who all are raw and athletic.
