On Friday, October 25, a new digitally-restored print of Roman Polanski's classic Rosemary’s Baby and the Sundance Film Festival’s surreal Escape From Tomorrow open at the Music Box Theatre on 3733 N. Southport Avenue.
The cinema will also screen Rocky Horror Midnight Madness which includes a pre-show dance party on Friday-Saturday, October 25-26 at midnight and Thursday, October 31 (Halloween) at 10 p.m. Admission is $12 and includes a prop bag. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Halloween radio hoax Orson Welles played on the country, Music Box will also present a special screening of the 1953 film The War of the Worlds. Before the movie, University of Chicago Professor and radio expert Neil Verma will present excerpts of the infamous 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds that convinced radio listeners the earth was under siege by martians. The Gift Theatre will also commemorate the Welles hoax with an alternate reimagining of the 1938 radio broadcast. Artistic Director Michael Patrick Thornton’s staged re-creation of the Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast is updated with locations shifted to 1938 Chicago. The performances are part of the Chicago Park District’s Classics in the Parks series and will feature live music by the Chicago City Wide Symphony Orchestra from October 30 to November 2 at Jefferson Memorial Park on 4822 N. Long Avenue and at Lincoln Park Cultural Center on N. Lincoln Park West, November 7-9. Suitable for ages six and up, the program is free, but reservations are recommended at 773-283-7071.
