On Thursday morning Universal Pictures released a teaser trailer for “Fifty Shades of Grey” the film adaptation of British author E. L. James’ provocative novel published in 2011.
The long-awaited trailer satisfies growing curiosity about the look and style of the film and its stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. What remains to be seen are the steamy scenes of sexual bondage and sado-masochistic behavior. The book is explicit. The movie trailer merely hints at the possibilities.
The story follows 21-year-old college student Anastasia "Ana" Steele through her initial encounter and magnetic sexual relationship with 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey. When published, the book captivated audiences with vivid portrayals of sexual dominance, submission and the inflicting of pain through bondage and physical abuse.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” is the first in a trilogy of erotic romance novels that includes “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed.” Initially they were self-published by James as e-books and print-on-demand until Vintage Books acquired publishing rights in March 2012.
To say they caught on is a gross understatement. By 2012 “Fifty Shades of Grey” outsold all seven of the Harry Potter books combined. Collectively the series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 52 languages.
Anticipation for the film has been growing ever since casting rumors began in March 2012 when Focus Features and Universal Pictures acquired the film rights. The trailer ignites a marketing campaign that begins now and fuels the film’s release to theatres on Valentine’s Day 2015.
The trailer is stylish, provocative and adventure-laden, and will entice even the most hardened Fifty Shades critic. Young Dakota Johnson is breathtakingly beautiful and subtle in her performance. Who shall we credit for that, her mom (Melanie Griffith) or her dad (Don Johnson)?
See you at the movies.
