On the eve. of the start of summer the Compton Community came together at Burrell-McDonald Park to enjoy a movie titled “Frozen” that tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on a journey with a snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

The event is part of Faith Inspirational Missionary Baptist Church (FAITH) and their “movie in the park” summer series activity, and is co-sponsored by Compton Parks & Recreation, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A movie event is sponsored once a month during the summer, and alternates between local parks. This writer is a member of FAITH, and has attended other movie in the park events and can testify that it is one of the great summer activities for the entire family. And of course many participants show up for the free hot dogs, popcorn, and drinks.

Faith Inspirational Church has a mission that includes “taking back the City of Compton” through its various ministries and activities that are designed to Save Souls and Change Lives and is one of the fastest growing churches in the area. Working closely with the youth population (including partnering with local schools) has been one of Faith’s priorities.

Faith is led by its awesome motivator Rev. Rafer Owens, Pastor and first lady Minister Natalie Owens. However Pastor Owens would tell you that many of the other church leaders are the reason that Faith has been so successful. The Church believes that using its membership to provide much needed resources (financial and human capital) to the local community is what will make a significant and positive change in people’s lives.

The movie in the park was a success. Families came early to set-up their chairs & blankets on the grass area to view the movie on a large screen. While waiting for darkness to set in many played basketball on a nearby court, others played catch with a football, kids gathered in the playground area, while others just sat and fellowship. And also the FAITH Church Choir comes out to each event to bless the audience with great music & singing. What a great time it was! Much thanks to the many volunteers, sponsors, and supporters.
