SNL has a serial sketch they refer to back stage as “the kissing family” where the joke is that the Vogelcheck family, who seem very conventional and cliché at first, are way too affectionate with each other. I also suspect it’s an excuse on the part of the writers to get male guest stars and male cast members to make out with each other for their own amusement.
This week, Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets) plays a son who comes home for Thanksgiving, with his new girlfriend (Vanessa Bayer) in tow, to meet his family. As the family becomes more and more inappropriately affectionate with each other, she becomes more and more uncomfortable, but tries to be polite.
After both Mom (Kristen Wiig) and Dad (Fred Armisen) each kiss their son on the mouth several times, the younger brother (Bill Hader) comes downstairs and gives his older brother a manly punch on the shoulder, but the brothers then break into a long, makeout-style kiss.
After a few more shenanigans, completely unexpectedly, Paul Rudd comes through the front door, as the audience screems for him because his presence is so unexpected. (He was in a Vogelcheck family sketch before, when he last hosted SNL. He and Jason Segel go to hug, like brothers who haven’t seen each other since the last family holiday, but wind up in full make out with visible tongue and groping.
It was such a sensation that when Segel made an appearance on Live with Kelly, the following Monday, co-hosted by Jerry Seinfeld, they felt compelled to ask him about it:
Seinfeld: You hosted SNL Saturday night.
Segel: You guys have done it. It’s insane.
Seinfeld: It’s insane.
Segel: I barely remember what happened. I remember making out with Paul Rudd…and that’s about all I remember.
Seinfeld: You’ll never forget that.
Segal: That was a long time coming.
Seinfeld: I kissed Kramer on one episode of my show and I still haven’t calmed down.
Segel: There’s not enough Listerine in the world.
Kelly: Some of the people at my show believe they saw some tongue action when you kissed Paul Rudd. Is that in fact what happened?
Segel: Totally.
