Movie review: 'The Hours'

Some movies become landmarks for generations of people. The quality of their cast, the chemistry between the actors, the topics tackled, the storyline, and the music seem to come together in the right fashion. They teach us a lot about Life and Love and bring growth to our doorsteps.

The Hours is one of the best movies of the Noughties (aka 2000s). Its powerful depiction of relationships and how inadequate many people feel in their own skins makes the film an example of cinematic excellence. The plot focuses on three women of different generations whose lives are united by Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. The beauty of this movie lies in the focus each woman is given and how they finally connect briefly (directly and indirectly) and understand what life is all about.

The depth of the story is captured in even more vibrant tones by the soundtrack. Composed by Philip Glass, the thirteen pieces slowly evolve towards a tragic yet uplifting ending. Each in turn, they force us to question our beliefs and reconsider Life and Death. The multi-layered combination of stringed instruments and piano guides all human senses through the complexity of existence. It raises an essential question: How have I treated myself lately?

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Ed Harris, and Claire Danes.
