Movie summary
The year is 1977. A father who works as a zookeeper decides to move his family from political unrest in the country of India, to Canada. He puts the family, including his son and main human character, Pi, and many of his zoo animals on a cargo ship and heads for Canada.
The adventure and fantasy begin when the ship sinks and Pi escapes on a life boat with a Bengal tiger. He befriends an orangutan, a hyena and a wounded zebra. He is lost for 227 days in the South Pacific before being rescued. This main element of the movie is narrated by a middle-aged Pi as he reflects back on the significance of that time in his younger days.
The main character Pi and his relationship and interaction with nature and animals is a major force in this movie. The cinematography is breath-taking and the story is multi-layered and full of symbolism.
Ang Lee directed : "Sense and Sensibility", "The Ice Storm", "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Brokeback Mountain".
