Movie award season is here

New York, it is that time of year again that all of us movie buffs live for: Award season is finally here! Tonight, Wednesday, January 9th the People's Choice awards will air on CBS. Tomorrow, Thursday, January 10th the Oscars will announce their nominations and the Critics Choice awards will air on the CW. And the Golden Globes will be on Sunday. Hopefully a few underdogs will surprise everyone this season but here is a list of some of the movies that will get a lot of action and some people who will get some Oscar love tomorrow.

  1. Lincoln- Many people think that Daniel Day-Lewis is going to win the best actor award because he played the 16th President to perfection. Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field are also most likely going to be in the running for supporting nominations as well. The film itself may get nods for best picture, best director (Steven Spielberg), adapted screenplay (Tony Kushner), costumes, makeup, editing and production design. Basically this is the movie to beat and may show up in most of the categories.
  2. Les Miserables- This is another movie that may show up in many different categories. The movie is an adaptation of the very successful musical and is creating a lot of buzz for Anne Hathaway who is finally getting the due that she has always deserved. She is a very talented actress and her performance is moving many moviegoers to tears. Along with her Hugh Jackman may be in the running for lead actor and Tom Hopper for director. The movie will also most likely score a nod for best picture and in many technical categories. This is a must see and does the musical justice in every way.
  3. Zero Dark Thirty- This movie is causing a lot of controversy which may sway some voters either way. Some may think that its take on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden is too fantastical and other may look at it and love the suspenseful feel that the movie gives of the investigation. The movie will most likely get nods for Director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.
  4. Argo- This movie is Ben Affleck's return to amazing acting after some time off and for a while he seemed like he would get nominated for best actor and director, but many people have stopped talking about the movie as much. But he definitely deserves a nod for both categories because he was amazing in this movie.
  5. Silver Linnings Playbook- This movie is a comedy about a bipolar teacher (Bradley Cooper) who falls for a troubled widower (Jennifer Lawrence). Bradley Cooper may not get a nomination or win this year, but he with this movie he is definitely establishing himself as a future Oscar contender with this movie. Robert De Niro may also get a supporting actor nod and the movie may get a Best Picture nod if there is 10 movies in the running.
  6. Life of Pi- Honestly this movie doesn't seem like it will get too many nominations but I hope that the academy surprises everyone and nominates director Ang Lee, the lead (Suraj Sharma), and give them a best picture nod. It will mostly do well in the technically categories because of the flawless recreation of the tiger and the elements surrounding the boat.
  7. Amour- This movie is heart wrenching because it depicts the last stages of an elderly couples love story. This movie takes love stories to a whole new level and could also make Emmanuelle Riva, 85 and Louis Trintignant, 82 the oldest lead-performer nominees ever. Even if this doesn't show up on the nomination list tomorrow it is definitely a must see for anyone who loves a good love story.
  8. The Master- Joanquin Phoenix is always amazing and brings his characters to life and this movie is no different. He plays a veteran arriving home who is suffering from PTSD and is sucked into a cult. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams may also get nods.
  9. Beast of the Southern Wild- This movie was the talk of the town by everyone. This was on many peoples must watch list and a lot of actors themselves praised Quvenzhane Wallis for her amazing portrayal as a little girl dealing with her world crumbling around her. Many hope that she gets a nod for best lead actress which would make her the youngest in history.
  10. Django Unchained- With the release of this movie and people having mixed reviews about it it is unclear if the movie will get many nods. However no one is mixed on the amazing performances of Kerry Washington and Leo DiCaprio. Leo has never played a villain before but his portrayal of the cruel and sadistic slave owner shows just how good of an actor he is. He is so perfect in this role that it is almost scary how vicious he can become. This movie opened up a whole new type of character that he portray if he wants. If he doesn't get a nomination for this role then that will be a gross injustice and someone would need to go back and recount the ballots.
