Movers start restricting summer bookings

Most families try to schedule their relocation plans for the period between May and August when kids are out of school. That's why the American Moving and Storage Association named May “National Moving Month”.

Just before the start of the annual summer surge, several of the largest interstate household goods carriers issued “early registration requirements” to restrict some military bookings that extend until July 1, 2011. This action comes the same day that the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) issued “additional guidance for the upcoming peak moving season” to military and civilian service members and their families.

SDDC is the executive agent of the United States Transportation Command. USTRANSCOM owns the new automated Defense Personal Property System. DPS is an internet based program introduced last year that was designed to counsel, select; manage and compensate transportation service providers responsible for relocating 600,000+ military service members and their families each year using a complicated new “Best Value Scoring Methodology”.

These types of 'new business' restrictions are normal within intra- and interstate transportation environments which typically rely on a limited amount of qualified professional van operators and licensed household goods trucks and equipment during the moving industry's peak volume period.

Customers who have not made arrangements for their local or long distance move estimates should do so immediately – especially if they expect to move before the second week of July. If you've received your quotes but haven't selected a carrier by signing their estimate/order-for-service, it's best to do so to lock in your pricing and service dates before you're told the company you want to use can no longer register new business.

Service within the entire household goods moving industry is going to be strained this year – particularly during the peak period between the middle of May and the middle of July. Make sure the local mover or long distance carrier you select have all of your contact information so they can alert you when changes to their schedule do occur.
