The month of November is officially recognized as Movember, the month when millions of men grow a mustache raising funds and awareness to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges that men face.
The movement started in Australia in 2003 with 30 Mo Bros (as they are affectionately called) growing mustaches and has grown into a global movement inspiring more than 4 million men and women across 21 countries supporting the campaign and men's health issues.
Men register at the beginning of November on the official site, making sure they start the month with a clean shaven face. Then they grow and groom their Mo (slang for mustache) and ask family and friend’s to donate to their efforts. Mo Sistas also play an important part of the campaign by registering on the official site and then help to raise funds.
Mo Sistas can also show support by changing their profile pictures on Social Media sites by adding a mustache to their avatars. It is amusing to see women's faces sporting a handle bar mustache and it is a great conversation starter.
At the end of Movember, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their journey by throwing events or attending one of the official gala parties held around the world.
Several cities across Canada are holding their own events. Montreal is holding their event on November 29th at 9:00 PM, located at Rialto Theater, 5723 Park Avenue. The cost of admission is $20.00. Join in the fun at an event in your home town.
The campaign to-date has raised over $447 million and funded 577 projects. The goal is to create greater awareness and understanding of the health risks that men face and to encourage men to take action to remain well.
