Florida summers can be brutal for us with the tremendous heat and humidity, but fall is in the air. The cooler weather is slowly heading our way. With the cooler weather comes a great opportunity to take our workouts into the great outdoors. It’s time to remove ourselves from the staleness of being indoors and spend some time in the fresh air enjoying the sunshine and a change of scenery. The crispness in the air just beckons you to come out and play.
Whether you want to focus on your cardio workout, weight training or yoga practice outdoors, there is nothing like the present time to start. It’s a great way to mix things up and give your body some variety.
Just being outside with the sun shining down on you; or perhaps sun rising or setting, your mind follows a different path. Such a great motivator! It really does make it very difficult to take your workouts back inside. There will always be plenty of opportunity to work out inside, so why not focus on being out in the fresh air.
Perhaps you would like to go for a brisk walk in the park, jog on the beach or even take advantage of the Pinellas Trail we have here and go for a long bike ride. The possibilities are endless. These are all great ways to get your cardiovascular and weight training workouts in. Plus, if it’s sunny you’ll have the added benefit of getting some Vitamin D, which many people are low on to begin with. Remember to continue using your sunblock while exercising anytime during the year.
Consider doing plyometric exercises outdoors with various types of jumps. This will really get your heart working as well as build some muscle. You can utilize park benches for step ups, push-ups, triceps dips and more. How about going to the playground and using the monkey bars, do some pull ups, ‘walk” with your hands or hang from the bars. Use your imagination, bring out your inner child and have some fun!
Give it a try, see how you feel.
Take your yoga/meditation practice outdoors and reconnect with Mother Nature. This really helps you feel connected to the outdoors and centered. It is very relaxing to practice while listening to the leaves rustle, birds chirping or waves gently cascading onto shore. Be sure to be mindful of your practice and focus on your poses and breathe. In doing so your body will benefit more.
You will find yourself challenging your body in different ways than your used to which is great for continued muscle building and weight loss. Just keep changing up your routine to keep it fun and interesting.
So, get that workout gear on, get outside, and get moving! You’ll be glad you did.
