It’s been a long wait, but at long last there is a new viral video to compare with the 2011 effort by Rebecca Black and her rendition of “Friday”. The Loughborough University Student Union (LSU) Executive has produced a video to rival the worst ever made – but is it pathetic, genius or just a bit of fun?
Made to promote the LSU, the Execs sing (mostly so badly out of tune it’s painful) and dance (or at least move) to the tune of “La La La” by Naughty Boy, for nearly four minutes “entertainment” that is beyond description.
But this frankly awful video, the latest in a long line of promotional efforts by the LSU Executive that have hardly reached the heights of artistic genius, does a brilliant job of advertising. It is so bad that it has gone viral on YouTube, so as a piece of advertising ought to be a great success - unless, of course, viewers take it seriously.
As Students’ Union President Josh Hurrell explained to the online student newspaper The Epinal, “Unfortunately, this video has gathered a few negative comments. It is meant to be taken as a joke. However, I fear people think we are being serious.” Unfortunately for Hurrell and his team it’s a joke that has gone badly wrong.
From the “few negative comments” made about the video, the LSU Exec totally miscalculated how it would be received. A lot of viewers have been left with the wrong impression and quite a few Loughborough students are perhaps understandably embarrassed.
This isn’t the first cheesy video produced by Loughborough. Over the past few years, they have successfully made cringe worthy videos featuring songs by Carly Rae Jepsen, Katy Perry and Nickelback. They even did a Superman spoof, but that at least was an obvious attempt at humour. None of these, however, has met with the derision of this latest video.
For all their failings as artistes, however, the students can’t be faulted for their enthusiasm and their dress. They look immaculate in their custom polos, made to order by Clifton. Potential Loughborough students shouldn’t be put off by the video. It is a great university and, clearly, even if they aren’t the best performers, the students there know how to dress.
To see the video, just go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w4vwTdQcPc or http://www.thecontroversy.co.uk/ it lasts a little under four minutes but be warned... You will need a strong stomach – it will either make you feel sick or you will fall about laughing. Hopefully, you’ll find it amusing, which according to Josh Hurrell it is meant to be. After all, could anything so bad really be meant to be taken seriously? Cringe or giggle but don’t let it put you off Loughborough.
