As a woman, do you seek a new way to improve your way of thinking and make better decisions in general? Well, I have a great suggestion for you. Learn to play chess! Did you know that playing chess can help you become a better thinker, planner, strategist, analyzer and problem-solver in your life and business? The truth is most people do not know how to solve their problems nor take time to invest in options which may help them improve their way of thinking. We are always facing new elements of change, problems, issues, or situations which we have no control over. Yet, there is a fun way to develop your cognitive abilities and learn to face problems with more confidence, determination, and logical clarity.
Playing chess is really a lot of fun because it is a logical and intellectual game which mimics a battle of war between two minds. Overall, the chess-playing skills required to play directly improve how you think, plan and react to things, so why not take advantage of them. More particularly, the skills I am referring to include, but are not limited to, focus, memorization, concentration, pattern recognition, facing your opponent and anticipating your opponent’s next move, as well as logical thinking, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning to name a few.
In the world today, there are approximately three percent of women competing professionally in chess. What this extremely low percentage reveals is that women are simply not taking advantage of playing chess or the invaluable rewards and benefits it offers. But let’s explore some possible reasons why women shy away from playing chess. Historically, society has dominated that chess is for men and perhaps women have negatively perceived the game to be too intellectual, time-consuming, or boring. This is old-fashion thinking and women need to step up their game in life and business.
In my book entitled “Let’s Play SHESS,” I empower girls and women through the game of chess. The analogy “From Pawn to Queen” is quite relative because the Pawn piece in the chess set is considered the weakest piece and worth one point. However, the Pawn piece is the only piece which has a special move and that is to be promoted to a Queen. In SHESS, your game of life, every female born into the world is considered a “Pawn in life” and just like the Pawn piece in the chess set, she has special abilities and capabilities as well, but only she can promote herself to a Queen status in life or in business. In other words, as a female, only you can be the driver of your own destiny – only you can play your game of life (SHESS) – your own way by preparing, analyzing, and making smarter decisions.
At the end of the day, we all seek new ways to improve something about ourselves. Why not start by having an open mind and approach chess with a flexible and fun attitude. Believe me, I have been playing chess for 35 years, and I am the thinker, analyzer and problem-solver I am today because I play chess.
