Colorado Springs is a gateway to incredible outdoor activities, including rock climbing, hiking, mountaineering, snowboarding, trailrunning, and cycling. Enjoying these activities requires a certain amount and type of equipment. Most people head to REI or Mountain Chalet, which are both great stores; however, before heading there for new gear, you might be surprised what you can find within a new gem of an equipment store just south of downtown Colorado Springs. Mountain Equipment Recyclers is a retail consignment store of high-quality outdoor equipment including gear for camping, backpacking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, cycling, running, climbing, fly fishing, canoes/kayaks, and any other outdoor activity associated with the beautiful state of Colorado.
In addition to being an outdoor mecca, Colorado Springs is home to six military installations, including one of the Army's largest, Fort Carson. Thousands of troops are stationed at Fort Carson and return from Iraq and Afghanistan with life-changing injuries. Many of these soldiers end up staying in Colorado Springs as veterans and require help from a variety of non-profit agencies in our community that provide services specific to soldier's needs.
This is where Mountain Equipment Recyclers comes in - they are committed to helping local soldiers and their families. 50% of the sale of donated gear is given directly to non-profit organizations assisting local military veterans. 5% of consigned gear is given to the same causes.
Having heard about this awesome mission that includes great deeds of corporate philanthropy, I just had to stop by and visit with the owner, Mike Mazzola to see it for myself. I was quite impressed with the store - upon first walking in, you are greeted with displays and racks of quality outdoor equipment, priced quite reasonably. I wanted to be a part of this great cause, so I consigned over a few backpacks that I did not need any longer.
I encourage you to head over to Mike's awesome store, you never know what you might be able to find for a great price, and best of all, you are helping out an awesome cause. Best yet, consider donating or consigning some of your equipment at his store rather than putting it on Craigslist - you can rest assured that your sale will help out a great cause! The store is located at 1005 S. Tejon Street, just south of downtown. Be sure to check out the slideshow to see some photos of the store, provided by Mike Mazzola. Additionally, you can check them out on Facebook and Twitter as well!
