Mount Vernon new home to turkey pardoned by President Obama

President Obama will follow tradition and issue a pardon to save the life of the National Thanksgiving Turkey on Wednesday, November 24, 2010.  If the turkey isn’t going to be dinner, what will happen to him?

The newly pardoned turkey will go to live at the Mount Vernon home of the first president, George Washington. Mount Vernon is very proud to be chosen as the new home for the turkey and plans quite a fuss for his arrival. According to Mount Vernon, they plan to welcome this important bird to Mount Vernon “with a ceremony featuring a trumpet fanfare and proclamation” to be read by someone portraying Washington’s farm manager, James Anderson.

Mount Vernon will have a custom-made pen ready for the turkey, who will arrive by horse-drawn carriage.  The famous fowl will be welcomed by a staff dressed in period costumes. The turkey will continue to live at Mount Vernon as part of their livestock program on the operating farm on the grounds.

Mount Vernon is considered a suitable place for this National Thanksgiving Turkey, as in 1789 George Washington was the first to issue a proclamation for a National Day of Thanksgiving.

George Washington had a camel at Mount Vernon for entertainment for Christmas in 1787, so the current estate also has a camel named Aladdin on the grounds. The Washington family did a great deal of entertaining, and the Christmas holidays were especially festive times.

After seeing President Obama pardon this year’s famous turkey, take a drive out to his new home to see him. The program “Christmas at Mount Vernon” will run through January 6, 2011.
