Luca Cumani’s Mount Athos will skip the Betfred Ebor at York in August. The son of Montjeu had been regarding by racing tipsters to be the 6-1 betting odds favourite heading into the meeting. Mount Athos recently held off Lyric Street and High Jinx by four lengths to win in the same Ebor course last weekend.
On Friday, Cumani commented about his unexpected move to withdraw from the prestigious horse race. “I can't run Mount Athos in the Ebor as he already has top weight and another 6lb penalty would kill him. We will have to look elsewhere but quite where that is I don't know.”
The runner is expected to compete in the Emirates Melbourne Cup slated for late 2012, and is considered a 16-1 co-favourite with William Hill. Last weekend, Mount Athos was tagged with 5-1 betting odds on his way to winning the John Smith’s Silver Cup at York.
In other news, Shropshire’s odds have improved to 20-1 (from 25) by William Hill for the Stewards Cup after winning at Ascot for Charlie Hills. Also, Andromeda Galaxy, formerly with Elie Lellouche, could have her first start for new trainer Sir Henry Cecil in the Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes at the Curragh on August 26.
