Locals-only spots tend to hold the most wealth of whatever their particular specialty may be: music, beer, shopping, and especially food.
Motown Café, located at 1010 Washington Boulevard is definitely exclusive to Detroit citizens. Its inconspicuous exterior, resembling that of a mini prison, coupled with its obscure corner real estate makes its discovery quite difficult for those not familiar with the neighborhood.
Motown doesn’t maintain a website, a Facebook page or a Twitter handle. And while it’s definitely a dive, it maintains a certain level of exclusivity through its reluctance to go public. But if a restaurant is good, word of mouth is all it needs.
Featuring an impressive breakfast menu with huge omelets stuffed with the tastiest of fillings, a sandwich and burger menu that won’t disappoint, and even a few dinner items to make a late evening at the office easy, Motown Café has a little something for everyone – with very low prices to boot.
The sandwiches come on fresh, chewy bread, piled high – the Philly Cheese Steak has quite a reputation – and the burgers hold up against even the most seasoned of burger-joint veterans.
The BLT is everything it should be, served on a sub bun rather than bread, and covered in tangy mayo with more bacon than you need. The gyros with Tzatziki sauce fit right into a city with a surplus of Mediterranean food.
The tiny interior is inviting, with a few very casual tables, coolers of beverages, and racks of Better Made chips. The service is incredibly fast for the quality and freshness of the ingredients, and you’ll be greeted with a smile every time you walk in.
Outdoor seating is exists in the form of permanent concrete picnic tables. Carryout is available.
