Motorola Droid Android 2.2 OTA update delayed

Verizon has pulled the plug on the Motorola Droid Android 2.2 update for now.

For those of you who have been holding back from manually installing Froyo aka Android 2.2 on your Motorola Droid, you may want to rethink your game plan. For those of you that have, go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back even if you’ve been experiencing issues.

And I know many of you have.

The latest concerning Verizon’s rollout of Android 2.2 to the Motorola Droid has it getting delayed because of problems with Adobe’s Flash. Apparently there is a glitch that they are trying to fix until they release the update to the masses.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that you can install Froyo on your phone right now and not have to worry about the OTA rollout. So, if you are completely over waiting for Verizon to get their act together, you can go ahead and do that.

Otherwise, you could be in for some waiting. Or, you could just go ahead and pick up the Motorola Droid 2 which has essentially been confirmed for release next Thursday on August 12th. That of course is subject to change especially considering this turn of events, but it’s very likely.

If you want to install Froyo manually, you can head here. If you want to get Flash, you can head right here.

If I have to wait another week because of concerns about the update then so be it! I have heard so many Horror stories about updates, upgrades etc when it comes to software and the MAIN problem is not putting great effort in checking, testing, etc. Software whether its official release beta etc, I treat every software as beta because well things have a way of going wrong. You shouldn't expect Software to be perfect! I would want the update/upgrade to Android 2.2 but Ive been ok with out it Since I got my phone and the last update went great! (2.0 to 2.1) Till then Verizon, Motorola keep double checking and making sure everything runs smoothly.

I know some people that work for verizon and actually they told me each day 100,000 updates are released.

As far as my local verizon rep and the technician I talked to on the phone this afternoon are concerned, verizon HAS NO PLANS TO HALT THE FRG01B OTA!!!

This means no bug in frg01b, according to them rollout indeed started on tuesday and is continuing as planned. The technician laughed when I mentioned FRG22 and told me not to worry, "just go ahead and do the manual update to frg01b, you'll be fine". There is no problem with flash, adobe just hasn't released a final version yet, ITS A BETA!!!

I don't know why all these forums (mydroidworld/droid-life, this one even) are so insistant that we droid users get screwed over, its not that big of deal.
Sorry to say but we know far more in these forums tban the vast majority of VZW reps. Most of the time they are pretty clueless and they are trained to tell you exactly what you want to hear.

If weve waited this long why would we update it manually? Especially if all they got to do is fix some bugs. Plus well probably get it next week so another week is nothing compared to 3 months.

This story is very untrue . Verizon is pushing the update

This is all a lie verizon is pushing the update, flash will be released aug 18 do your homework before posting

You do realize that "indefinitely" means forever, right? Working out the bugs for a few more weeks is not an indefinite delay.

  • English Guy 1 year ago

In fact, the word indefinitely works fine here.

Ben's right, wrong word choice. Fixed. I have checked my facts with a number of sources including people with the Droid who haven't seen or heard anything from Verizon. So I'm sticking by what you read here.

From the source: "Motorola and Verizon are pulling all FRG Froyo builds and ceasing any current plans to update to Froyo."

    Indefinitely works.

This is BS. When did journalism sink this far. This is a bunch of rumors. Like a bunch of women sitting around cackling like hens. PLEASE QUIT spreading rumors and trying to pass it off as the truth. Somebody get a decent writer for this site.

Well I loaded frg01b and I loaded the Flash .apk. It all works fine. I'm not impressed with the advertised speedup. And my WIFI at work...doesn't anymore. So who really cares when, the "official" version arrives. These bugs will get corrected eventually. It's not as if you're getting a brand new phone.

Well I think Verizon should make sure eveything runs smooth. I like the idea of flash but let me let you in on a little secret that will tide you over until the update is released. Give me feed back and thank me later if you don't know this at silley180@Gmail.Com. there is a app in android market called skyfire. It works on most sites and it reads flash so you can still injoy something until the update comes. Thank me later...Chris L Lewis

My main concern about manually applying the 2.2 update is that I still want the official one when it comes out and I want to make sure that if my phone takes a crap on me, I will be able to put android 2.1 back on. Any advice as to help me backup my droid completely to put stock 2.1 back on? I'm sure the Droid won't be getting updated beyond this, so if the manual update to 2.2 is good, I'd rather not wait.

  • Anthony 1 year ago

I manually installed 2.2 and it bricked my Droid. Was on the phone with Verizon for over and hour and they said I wasn't the only one. They sent me a new Droid via fed ex. At this point I couldn't care less about 2.2. Just happy to have a working Droid again, that was torture. Good luck everybody, just be careful.

I'm updating my droid in about 10 minutes. I called Verizon and they told me that all updates should be out by the 21st of this month.
