Motorist killed after hitting cane truck, rolling with 3 juvenile passengers

A motorist was killed after his vehicle, which had three juvenile passengers, struck the rear of a cane truck and rolled backwards several times before stopping near I-285 in Smyrna.

Police on Saturday were still trying to determine what caused the Buford man to run into the back of the stopped truck.

The incident happened shortly after 1:40 p.m. Friday on the ramp from westbound I-285 to South Cobb Drive, according to Cobb County police.

The driver of a red and white 1998 Link Belt HTC8670 crane truck was stopped in traffic on the exit ramp from westbound I-285 to South Cobb Drive.

While the driver of the crane truck was stopped at the red traffic signal waiting to turn left onto South Cobb Drive, the driver of a black 2012 Chevrolet Cruze struck the rear of it.

“After striking the crane truck, the Chevrolet rolled backwards down the ramp towards the southbound flow of I-285 traffic,” Sgt. Pierce said.

“Just prior to entering the interstate, the Chevrolet finally came to a stop after rolling down the embankment between the interstate and the ramp.”

The driver of the crane truck, Mr. Brian D. Maddox, 37, of Dallas, was not injured.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Mr. Sylvester Johnson, 42, of Buford, was transported to Emory Adventist Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The three juvenile passengers inside the Chevrolet were not injured in the crash.

Investigators do not expect to file charges in this case and anyone with information about it is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
