Motorcycles: why women ride

Actually women ride motorcycles for the same reason men ride: for the freedom, the sense of adventure, and the pure joy of riding. The reason women came to the front seat is a varied as the women themselves.

Some women were born to ride, coming from motorcycling families where weekends were spent in the dirt or on the highways and on two-wheels. Those girls knew from an early age that they would be grabbing the handlebars and taking off whenever the spirit called.

Some women, after enjoying a few decades of riding behind, are ready to see why the motorcyclist has a permanent smile.

Some women hear their doctors proclaim them cancer-free and after thinking that over for a moment, choose not to let another opportunity to live life to its fullest ever pass them by.

Some women decide to celebrate mid-life changes or a mid-life crisis, such as an empty nest or a suddenly single status, just like the men would do; go out and spend some money and buy a toy.

Some women are encouraged by a girlfriend who rides. Maybe that friend even says “sign up for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class and I will take it with you.”

With the advancement of technology (electric starters for example), the availability of training, and the encouragement of other women riders, the percentage of women riders is the fastest growing segment of the motorcycling public.

For the men who comment “I would never let my wife ride” we retort “and that is why I would never marry or let my daughter marry someone like you.”

But the main reason women ride is BECAUSE WE CAN!

If you want to share the reason(s) you ride, leave a comment below.

I was extremely proud when my wife got her motorcycle license. It's fantastic when the ladies come through the Basic Rider Course and get the highest scores!

Man if my daughter wanted to ride, I would be scared for her, but I would let her. I ride in Fla, and well I guess it is the same everywhere, as long as you pay attention to the idiots who don't pay attention to you, then it is all good.

who never experienced riding a motorcycle never experienced true freedom and liberty, lets face it, motorcycle girls are hot and wild... who wouldn't love a female rider!? its just the safety concerns that freek us out for them, coz u know how dangerous it can be... so for occasional riding it wouldn't hurt them... much.

I ride because it's just me and the open road. Nothing like feeling the wind strumming against me as I glide down the highway. It's a breath of fresh air. Plus, I like doing something not everybody else can do - men or women

I have always loved motorcycles. So in my mid life crisis I have learned to ride. I love being able to ride my own bike and feel sorry for those ladies that are comfortable riding behind their husbands they don't know what they are missing. I want the freedom to ride when I want to and not depend on if my husband feels like riding.

Nice article. I was 22 years old and already out of college the first time I saw and met a woman driving a motorcycle. My first thought was..."She's cool." And my wife of 21 years also knows how to ride her own dirt bike and ATV's, though she prefers to sit with me on the street bike. Go ladies! Real men love to see you ride. Ladies on bikes are confident and sexy.

I agree. It's that sense of freedom. I LIVE TO RIDE!

Unfortunately, my first motorcycle experience was riding with a testosterone-poisoned young man, and the emotion I associate with the activity is fear rather than freedom. Have you ever ridden between to trucks on a freeway? I wouldn't recommend it. ;-)

I do it because I can. I can because I want to. I want to because some man said I couldn't.
