Quaid Harley-Davidson Loma Linda in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) presented a Motorcycle Awareness Day.
The South lot of the dealership was taped off with yellow tape and orange traffic cones were set up in an obstacle course for the motorcycle officers also known as Motor Officers to ride through. The course consisted of tight left and right turns and a circle.
The Motor Officers demonstrated the skills they learn from the two week course they go through. The CHP wants all riders to get proper training if they had not done so, it makes for a safer and better rider.
I spent some time talking with Motor Sergeant Bill Rangel with the San Bernardino Area of The California Highway Patrol. He told me to become a Motor Officer you first become a California Highway Patrol Officer then apply to be a Motor Officer that Officer first does thirty days with a Certified Training Motor Officer and if recommended they go the Motor Officer’s two week course where they spend time working on all the skills needed to be a Motor Officer such avoiding obstacles, proper braking, high speed riding, and control of the motorcycle.
The CHP showed up with four motorcycles two of the older BMW Motorcycles and two of the new model Harley-Davidson FLHTP motorcycles.
The FLHTP (the P is for Police) also known as the Police Electra Glide is modified for police duty with a uprated charging system, special lights and switches, heated grips a special seat, Anti- Lock brakes and long life components like bearings and belt drive. The engine also features an EITMS or Engine Idle Temperature Management System for when the motorcycle running and parked such as when the Officer is conducting a traffic stop. The CHP is currently phasing in the new Harley Davidson FLHTP, they are still using their BMW model motorcycle many of which have well over one hundred thousand miles on them.
Some of the people coming and going to the dealership like the new CHP Harley-Davidson motorcycles and took time to talk with the officers and of course many photos were taken.
Also on site was the Blood Mobile and The Loma Linda HOG Chapter was making burgers which were also popular.
Harley-Davidson also has a Riders Education Program called the Riders Edge that can found at www.harley-davidson.com/learn-to-ride.
Both programs offer courses for beginner and experienced riders.
