Over the last four years, there have been reports of a winged man like creature that stalks the area between Show Low, Saint Johns, and New Mexico. In many of the reports, the creature is seen inspecting road kill on the Highway, and it is generally seen during the night.
The first report was made in 2009 by an anonymous woman. She stated she was driving to Springerville, Arizona from New Mexico. As she drove around a corner, she spotted a creature looking much like a man crouched at the edge of the road inspecting a dead deer.
When the headlights flashed upon the creature, it stood up, faced the on-coming car, spread its wings, and flew away. She described it as being about six feet tall, red glowing eyes, body of a man, and wings like a bat. The wings were about twice the length of the body. As the creature gained altitude, it passed over her approaching car. She reported she could hear the flaps of the wings, and felt her car move slightly with each beat. Terrified, she sped all the way into town with no further incident.
Similar Mothman Sightings occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Mothman was “… typically described as a broad-shouldered black or gray humanoid at least seven feet in height with moth-like wings that extended about ten feet. His glowing red eyes seemed to have a hypnotic effect. Sometimes the creature appeared headless, with round, reflective eyes set into his shoulders.” The article goes on to state the Point Pleasant Mothman swoops down on cars terrifying the occupants, and then disappears into the darkness.
Again, this is very interesting, but it also has basis in Zuni and Hopi legends and Archaeology. At Rio Puerco Valley at the site of Pottery Mound was excavated by a team lead by Frank C. Hibben in 1961. The team uncovered shards of pottery dating to 1350 AD which depicts a Mothman being.
The Indian Legend talks of how such a creature plaguing the Pueblo was removed through a certain ritual never to be harassed again. This creature is described as being tall, humanoid, and resembling the Pink-spotted Hawk Moth.
There is some debate as to the Mothman being good, evil, or a deliverer of omens and messages. You decide.
