Mothers In Charge began in Philadelphia in 2003 as a way for Philadelphia moms to come together in the fight against gun violence.

The group was founded by Dorothy Johnson-Speight, whose son was murdered because of a conflict over a parking space.

KYW reports that Mothers In Charge is preparing for a program called "1000 Women for 1000 Girls" in which Philadelphia area women will be paired with girls. The program's goal is to give a "positive female direction" to girls in need.

Mothers In Charge works to provide support to area families who have been touched by violence and to educate the public about stopping gun violence.
