A former Long Island woman, incarcerated for the last five years after killing her three young children in a bathtub, now has a fourth child. Leatrice Brewer, 33, gave birth in the Mid-Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center in New Hampton, N.Y., causing investigators to question the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy, reports NBC News on Oct. 10.
In 2008, Brewer was found not guilty in the killings of her children – aged 1, 5 and 6 – in their apartment in New Cassel because of “mental disease or defect.” After forcing her children underwater, Brewer tried to kill herself by drinking a concoction of household cleaning chemicals. When that didn’t work, Brewer jumped out of her second story window, but again survived.
Psychiatrists had determined she suffered a major depressive disorder and believed she killed the children to save them from the potentially fatal effects of voodoo, says NBCNewYork.com.
The father of two of the three children that were killed, Innocent Demesyeux, won a wrongful death settlement against Nassau County. Brewer has been trying to get her hands on a chunk of the estate awarded to Demesyeux.
New York's Son of Sam Law, named for the infamous 1970s serial killer, prevents criminals from profiting because of their crimes.
Demesyeux said he learned of Brewer’s child because he was contacted by a lawyer looking to place the infant in a home.
“[The lawyer] told me Leatrice had a baby while she was in that facility,” Demesyeux said.
Demesyeux’s Attorney Tom Foley called the fact Brewer has another child “outrageous,” adding that the so-called secure facility is to blame.
“This person's supposedly in a secure facility and she gets pregnant. This is the woman who had no idea what she was doing when she murdered her children,” Foley said.
The state Office of Mental Health, which oversees Mid-Hudson, declined to comment, citing privacy laws, says NBC.
