MARENGO, OHIO - An Ohio mother is outraged and wants all the social media harassment that her daughter has been receiving over the internet to stop.
Emily LeVan is the mother of a 9-year-old male-to-female transgender child. Though LeVan’s daughter was physically born male, she identifies as female. Last week, after legally changing her daughter’s name to Keat, LeVan posted the news on her Facebook page.
“I was celebrating it because it was a big step for us, and a couple of people took it upon themselves to berate me for it. I was celebrating it because it was a big step for us, and a couple of people took it upon themselves to berate me for it.” - Emily LeVan.
During a recent interview with WBNS-10TV, LeVan said that some parents of Keat’s classmates at Highland Elementary School in Morrow County had written derogatory messages including “I am terribly ticked that the parents are allowed to send their boy to school as a girl and put him in this embarrassing situation” and “This is child abuse!”
Keat said that she was also teased by her classmates at school when she began transitioning last year. School superintendent Bill Dodds confirmed Keat’s accounts of bullying and said they started addressing the issue immediately. Dodds states that the school has a zero tolerance policy for that type of behavior.
“It’s disgusting, we don’t accept it and we won’t accept it.” - Bill Dodds.
According to the school board, Ohio’s anti-discrimination law makes no specific reference to transgender youth.
LeVan says the school officials have been very supportive of Keat’s transition, and she hopes the community will one day be just as supportive as well.
