The body of a two year-old child was discovered in an Oregon resort hotel room and her 13-year-old sister was severely cut and seriously injured in the same room. The mother of the children is missing, she had checked in with the kids on Wednesday. A housekeeper found the injured child and the deceased toddler on Friday morning, with no sign of the mother anywhere, according to MSN News on August 2.
Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn reports that they are actively searching for the children’s mother, 40-year-old Jessica Smith of Golendale, Washington. There was no indication of a forced entry into the room and nothing appeared out of place in the third floor accommodations.
Smith is a “person of interest” in this case, but they mainly want to make sure she is safe. She checked into the Surfsand Resort, with her two kids on Wednesday. When the housekeeper found the girls a little before 10 a.m. on Friday they were alone in the room.
The 13-year-old girl, who is reported as “critically cut” by MSN News, was flown to a Portland hospital and underwent surgery. Her name has not been released. Law enforcement has not released the circumstances around the girl’s cuts.
Portland KGW News reports that there were no cuts on the two-year-old, but it is not known how she died. The 13-year-old made it through surgery and although still critically injured, she is stable today.
Police did not release the cause of death for the two-year-old and her name was also not made public. They believe that the housekeeper found the children no more than a few hours after the violence occurred in the hotel room.
The mother’s car is also missing and police are asking for the public’s help by being on the lookout for that car. It is a 2007 gold Chevrolet Suburban with Washington license plate, APX 3141. They have no idea if she is alright or where she was going.
The Clatsop County Major Crime Team is working in tandem with federal agencies on this investigation. Smith had tried to obtain a restraining order on her estranged-husband on July 17, but was denied. Police are working with her husband, who is not a person of interest in this case. They still have not named a suspect in this case.
