Mother stabbed to death, daughter raped in NY carjacking

On March 14 in Syracuse, N.Y., a 10-year-old girl was brutally raped and her mother was fatally stabbed by a man awaiting trail on child pornography charges.

According to Syracuse.com, David J. Renz removed the ankle monitoring device he was wearing at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Renz had been under curfew imposed by the federal court after he was released without bail in January.

Renz followed the girl as she left the CNY Gym Center at 9 p.m. on Thursday, then attacked the girl and her mother, 47-year-old Lori A. Bresnahan.

Bresnahan was tied up by Renz before he raped the girl in the Great Northern Mall parking lot. He then drove the victim's car to a nearby town.

When Renz was stabbing Bresnahan, the girl managed to escape. Bresnahan died at Upstate University Hospital from the attack.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Fletcher stated in federal court on Friday that Renz had deactivated the ankle monitoring bracelet.

Monitoring devices are supposed to provide immediate notification to probation officers when tampered with but this didn't happen.

By the time BI of Boulder, Colo. notified the U.S. Probation Office at 11:30 p.m. that there had been no movement detected from Renz' device for several hours, Renz had already been arrested following the attack.

This was the second incident in a week in New York of a GPS monitoring device being removed by the person wearing it.

According to FingerLakesDailyNews.com, 30-year-old Shane Jacobs of Hector escaped after removing his monitoring device on Mar. 11.

Jacobs, who was convicted in the rape of a 13-year-old in 2001, is considered armed and dangerous. There have been many other escapes reported across the country by those wearing monitoring devices, according to comments posted on Syracuse.com.

Renz was arrested Jan. 9 for possession of child pornography. Over 500 videos and 3,000 images appearing to be child pornography were found on a computer seized in the arrest.

Renz is currently being held without bond in protective custody in the Justice Center Jail following an attack by other inmates.

Meanwhile, a little girl's world has been destroyed forever and the person she would have looked to for help in healing from the vicious attack is gone.
