Alfalfa is a member of the legume family, with small, split leaves; purple flowers like clovers; and unusual spiral pods. It has long roots that reach deep into the soil for minerals.

Alfalfa contains eight essential amino acids; vitamins A, E, K, B, D; phosphorus; iron; potassium; chlorine; sodium; silicon; magnesium; and beta carotene.

Alfalfa is a natural diuretic and laxative to ease water retention, cleanse one’s system, improve digestion, and keep one’s tract in fit condition. Because of these values, alfalfa has been used as an aid for digestion.

CAUTION: This herb is not recommended for people with autoimmune disorders.

Alfalfa tea is made from the leaves.

One needs to take 1 teaspoon of dried alfalfa to 3 cups of boiling water. Steep the tea for 10 -20 minutes. Due to the long steeping time of alfalfa tea, one may need to reheat the tea before drinking. Do not bring it to a boil while reheating, just raise the temperature to just before a boil prior to serving.
