Tea and Mother's Day make a wonderful pairing: An afternoon tea service is a refreshing alternative to long buffet lines while tea, especially when paired with colorful teaware, makes a great gift! Fortunately, Chicago has some wonderful tea stores and afternoon tea venues that celebrate Mother's Day in style.

Tea and teaware sales

Adagio Teas - State Street: Get a free tin of one of Adagio's special Mother's Day teas (green, black or herbal, a $9 value) with a $25 purchase. Additional free tins can be earned with each $25 spent, up to three tins for a $75 purchase.

TeaGschwendner: Pick up a lovely teaware gift set at TeaGschwendner: Right now, TeaGschwendner offers gift sets that include loose tea and teaware. If you've wanted to turn mom on to loose leaf tea, one of these gift sets should do the trick.

Teavana: Teavana offers an amazing array of beautifully packaged teas, exquisite teaware and affordable tea-of-the-month clubs. Each Chicago location has different offerings, so call ahead if you fancy something on their website to make sure the Teavana store in your area has it in stock.

Dining out

While brunch is always a great option for Mother's Day, so is afternoon tea. Here are two alternatives, each incorporating nifty bonuses like beauty treatments or a museum tour:

The Drake Hotel: The Drake's Mother's Day Afternoon Tea (Sunday, May 13th) includes its traditional tea menu, live harp music, complimentary beauty treatments offered by professionals from Mario Tricoci and a fashion show. The cost is $36 per person, $18 for children under twelve. Make reservations online or by calling 312-787-2200.

The Driehaus Museum: The museum offers a Victorian-themed tea on Saturday, May 12th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Costumed staff serve a traditional tea service. The $60 fee includes a tour of the museum. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling 312-482- 8933.
