Come out to the site of the Mother of all Civil War Battles, this weekend, and celebrate your own mom with a wide array of ventures to pursue. From special lunches to interactive events designed with your mother in mind, Mom is going to love this weekend in Gettysburg.
Mother's Day kicks off a day early this year on Saturday with Mamie Remember's Gettysburg & 1950s Fashion Show. As a loving mother, devoted wife and first lady, Mom is sure to enjoy this program by the National Park Service at the Eisenhower National Historic Site. Local resident Ruthmary McIlhenny, who has studied Mamie Eisenhower extensively (and has been a volunteer at the Eisenhower National Historic Site since 1991), will portray the former First Lady t 10:45 a.m and then again at 2:15 p.m. Listen as Mamie gives a 30 minute program that recounts unique facts and tidbits about her life, including the 37 different homes she and “Ike” lived in during their married life.
Visitors to the Eisenhower Site will also enjoy a glimpse of the Eisenhower garage and their original cars. There will also be a formal tea, which is already sold out. The Victory Society will also present a narrated fashion show, Fashions of the Fifties, at 11:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. This show will include both formal and casual styles popular of men, women and children from the 1950s.
On Saturday, Mom can also get an early start celebrating her special day by attending the Willow Pond Farm Open House. In addition to this venue, Reid's Orchard Winery will present “Music For Mama.” This concert event will bring together Mom's special day along with the first ever Wine Tourism Day, which will premier nationally on May 11. Reid's Orchard will open its doors at noon and serve up sangria all the way through to 9 p.m. Live music will delight the day and will include: Fynsound, swing-nova and music by Sharon and John Knowles. Catering will be available from the NEW A-ville Inn, and families are encouraged to bring picnic lunches. Well behaved children and pets are welcome. Bring your own chairs, blankets and other items of leisure.
Sunday, Mom's true day, will be bustling with activity. Is your mother up for a hike? Then bring her out to Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve for a guided hike, led by local horticulture enthusiast, Joe Breighner to learn about local plants. The walk will take place from 1p.m. To 2:30 p.m. Though not required, pre-registration is recommended. Perhaps Mom isn't a nature girl but rather an enthusiast for theater events. In that case, bring Mom out to the Majestic at 3 p.m. to see comedian Lily Tomlin for a special Mother's Day gig. Then, let's not forget about giving Mom a rest from cooking and treating her to a nice, hearty fare on her special day. Many local restaurants are having special Mother's Day menus including Hauser Estate Winery, with a special wine and dine event at noon and a major brunch buffet at the 1863 Restaurant.
Whatever you have planned for Mom this weekend, make it special by celebrating in Gettysburg.
