Mother’s Day will be celebrated this Sunday. And some mothers, bless their hearts, will be spoiled rotten. And rightfully so! Don’t most mothers deserve to be pampered? After all, mothering is by far one of the hardest (yet most rewarding) jobs a person can do. But for some mothers – and a huge number or children – mothering is a painful reminder of their lack.
Take for example mothers who’ve miscarried. Or worse still, those whose born baby died at some stage of its life. Or mothers who’ve aborted and later regretted it. For these women, Mother’s Day is a time of grieving. But it is no less so for the children who don’t have mothers, or whose mothers don’t act like mothers.
America reportedly has 500, 000 children in the foster care system—many desperately needing homes. San Diego boasts a sad 7, 500 children caught in the foster system.
The hardest hit are siblings, older children and ethnic groups. Many of these children don’t get to give a card to their moms because their mothers simply aren’t around or are dysfunctional. These children dream of having a home and a mom.
Not everyone can foster a child, but everyone can do something to help. Here are a few ways you can help a foster child:
Check out Sleep Train to see ways to help. Drop off new clothes for foster children at a nearby Sleep Train.
Pray for orphans and foster children.
Contact a local fostering agency to ask how you can help—for example by mentoring a child.
Here are some local foster care agencies and ministries:
Angels Foster Care Family Network,
