Mother of a teen with Asperger's writes the book 'Quell' for her children

Sonya Hill, Kentucky resident and mother of two, was inspired to write Quell as a means to introduce her children to some of the social and environmental changes that they would likely experience as teenagers. She never intended to have it published, however, it is now in school libraries and bookstores around the country.

Sonya's oldest child, Tommy, was diagnosed with Asperger's Sydrome, a type of high functioning Autism,  in 2010. The diagnosis brought comfort and understanding to what Sonya describes as "quirky" behavior and routines that her son exhibits. She further states, "We cherish Tommy so much and wouldn't change him for anything. He adds something special to our family."

The book itself, is not a book about Asperger's, although it does include Asperger's traits in her descriptions. It is rather, a way to describe relevant social situations in detail; making it written more for than about the Asperger's teenager.

"I wanted a story that touched on subjects teens deal with daily", says Sonya. "Subjects such as figuring out who you are, moving to a new place, dealing with change, and falling in love."

Sonya does't only focus on educating the youth in social situations, she wanted her book to be an instructional tool as well.

"There are a lot of great books to use as an example of the correct way to write, I wanted to try something new." says Sonya. Without compromising the story, Sonya includes mistakes in her writing. Mistakes that students are encouraged to find. She likens it to a "scavenger hunt".

Quell also provides a historical accent as it is set in Hodgenville, Kentucky, birth place of Abraham Lincoln.

The best part is, there is more to come. Sonya will be adding to the Quell Saga soon. Do not miss out a great story written by an amazing mother, order your copy here.
