Two young sisters are dead and their mother charged with felony DUI, Fox Carolina reported January 1.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Billy Elder, the accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. this morning on Wells Highway near Utica Baptist Church in Seneca. A Dog Durango driven by Melissa Patton, 32, hit a sign at the church and flipped onto church property.

One-year-old Taniyia Gambrell and her 4-year old sister Saryia Patton-Dean died from head injuries suffered in the accident. Taniyia was in a child safety seat, but it wasn't enough to save her young life. She died at the scene. Saryia, who was wearing a seatbelt, died after being transported to Oconee County Medical Center.

Melissa Patton and a male passenger were transported to Oconee County Medical Center, and later charged with two counts of felony DUI and one count of DUS. She is currently at Oconee County Detention Center on $50,652 bond.

A memorial service for the children is planned for Wednesday at Utica Baptist.
