Last June, when EMTs recovered the drowned remains of an 11-month-old baby from his Englewood, Fla. mother’s bathtub, the mom said that she had only left the baby alone with the water running “for a short while.”
On Dec. 17, The Herald-Tribune reported that the baby’s mother, 24-year-old Sharon Swat, has now been arrested and charged with child abuse causing great bodily harm or disability in the drowning death of her son Kayden Swat.
Investigators were suspicious of the mother’s story from the very beginning.
Originally the mom told police that she had only left her baby in the tub for a short while as she went to the kitchen to place his baby bottle in the sink. Swat went on to say that when she returned to the bathroom, the tub was overflowing with water; and the baby was face down in the water at the bottom of the tub and unresponsive.
Investigators checking out her story returned to Swat’s home in July, and found that after 34 minutes of water running in the tub, it still had not overflowed.
In addition to Swat leaving her baby in the tub for more than one-half hour, investigators also say that the negligent mother "left her son, who did not know how to swim, alone in the bathtub with a non-verbal autistic 4-year-old child ….”
"One of the EMTs came running out, then one came walking out with lifeless body of the kid that drowned in the tub," said neighbor Mario Lopez.
Investigators in the case said that Swat "knowingly and intentionally walked away from her 11-month-old son in the tub."
Sharon Swat is being detained in the Charlotte County Jail without bond.
