A Jackson woman is being sought by police after a mother was attacked and her infant daughter was seriously injured, according to a Monday afternoon news release from the Jackson Police Department.

Police said Jocilyn Taylor, 22, is wanted for simple assault on Sherita Phelps and reckless aggravated assault on Phelps' 4-month-old daughter in a Dec. 17 attack.

Officers responded to a disturbance call at Royal Arms Apartments, 1580 N. Royal Street, around 12:50 p.m. on Dec. 17. The department’s investigation determined that Phelps had brought her daughter to see the infant’s father. The infant’s father is also Taylor's boyfriend.

The release said Phelps knocked on the door while holding her daughter and when Taylor opened the door, she began hitting Phelps. The attack caused Phelps to drop her daughter and the infant landed on her head, causing her to be injured.

The infant, who suffered a skull fracture, was transported to a local Jackson hospital and was then transferred to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. She has been released from the hospital, police said.

Police are searching for Taylor. She is described as being a black female, standing at 5 feet and 3 inches in height and weighing 135 pounds. Her last known address is in Royal Arms Apartments.

Police are asking that anyone with information on Taylor’s whereabouts contact the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 731-424-8477 (TIPS). You can also submit a cyber tip at and click on “web tips”.
