Is it actually December 31st?!?! It feels like just yesterday I was writing my TV resolutions article for 20Dozen. Well, I know I haven’t been writing as much and I do apologize but every year come November and after, my world becomes insane with birthdays, holidays, and everything else. That being said, I couldn’t leave you without one last article in 2012. So let’s review all the craziness for better or for worse in the world of TV this past year. Happy new year and here are my picks for 2012’s Most Shocking TV Moments.
Elena becomes a vampire. (The Vampire Diaries): Sure, fans of the books knew what was coming but the way it happened (Ric dying a hunter, Bex running them off the bridge, Stefan saving Matt) was pretty darn awesome. And the events after her turning have hit like emotional rocks at our shipper hearts nonstop since—whether you’re rooting for Stefan or Damon. One thing is for sure: Elena is a hot mess as a vampire and as a result we’ve had some kick-ass, entertaining television.
Opie dies. (Sons of Anarchy): I’ll never forget being spoiled about this TV passing while I was vacationing in Hawaii. My entire social network feed was pouring “Oh no” and “Not Opie!” for 24 hours and I knew the worst had happened. But then watching the actual episode and seeing how he took one for the team… So. Effing. Tragic. And yet, it made narrative sense to take Opie away from Jax. It completely opened Jax up to be the very villain he fought so hard not to be for years. Shakespeare on motorcyles indeed. Honorable Mention: Otto viciously severing his tongue. Ouch.
Seattle over Green Bay. (Monday Night Football): I never even knew who Golden Tate was. After this game I cursed his whole family and everyone he’d ever cared about. No call on the offensive pass interference?! Simultaneous possession?! Two refs signaling two completely different calls!! This game wanted to make me vomit after all the hooting and hollering that came before it—and I didn’t even bet money. The WORST officiating EVER gave Seahawks a win that I’m sure they felt embarrassed to receive. Well, everyone except Golden Effin Tate.
Plane Crashes and Dying in the Woods. (Grey’s Anatomy): Shonda Rimes really loves to pull those heartstrings and make people cry about her show. She’s put bombs in bodies, killed off major characters, and even put a crazy shooter in a hospital. But when she put our favorite doctors on a plane, then crashed it, and left them for dead in the cold, dangerous woods for days… we didn’t know if we could keep watching after the hiatus. And sure enough, we came back to deaths, posttraumatic stress, and lots of tears. Why do you hurt us so much, Shonda?!
The Breakup Episode. (Glee): Say what you want about Glee… It’s a kid’s show. It’s a musical. It’s inconsistent. But this past season, with the addition of some of its major characters moving on to college and different cities, the show has actually improved. Never more so than in the episode where 4 of the main couples take a setback in their respective relationships. The episode took a mature approach to all situations and it made for some really heartbreaking, but ultimately logical breakups. Plus, they picked solid song options; particularly that last rendition of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” which was both emotionally riveting and musically satisfying.
Lori Dies & Gets Eaten By Zombie. (The Walking Dead): I never even liked Lori all that much. But man was it hard to see her go the way she did. A nasty C-section, your son having to put a bullet in your head, and then getting eaten by a zombie—that’s a crazy way to go out. But perhaps the effects of Lori’s death on Rick were the hardest to watch. Him realizing what had happened and collapsing in uncontrollable sobs… it’s no wonder he started hearing imaginary phone calls; the guy really has been through so much.
The CIA Gets Blown to Bits. (Homeland): Just when I thought this show couldn’t get any crazier… Yes, it seemed like everything was tied into a neat little bow and perhaps there was a chance for a real life between Brody and Carrie, but then that freakin mole (who I still think is somehow Saul!) had to park Brody’s car in front of the VP’s memorial and blow everything up. RIP David Estes! You were a backstabbing bastard anyway. RIP Finn Walden! I’m sure Dana will find a whole other way to make this about herself. RIP Brody’s reputation... thanks to that leaked video of him confessing to the bombing that never actually happened. I don’t even know what crazy ish will happen next year but that finale literally blew people’s minds. Bravo!
