The U.S. House of Representatives voted tonight and passed the fiscal cliff bill against the wishes of conservatives and conservative Republicans. While the bill passed and was approved by nearly all democrats, 85 Republicans voted for the legislation, including Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s former presidential running mate to the surprise of many.
It didn't take long for House leaders to learn they did not have a majority behind any spending-cut plan, and allowed the straight vote.
While the bill passed, the majority of Republicans, 151 of them in the US House voted against the bill along with 16 democrats.
The bill passed 257 to 167 but Congressman and House Speaker John Boehner's top two lieutenants, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., joined the other 149 Republicans in opposing the deal.
All of Georgia’s Republican US Congressmen voted against the bill and appears that Georgia’s entire democratic US Congressmen voted for the bill.
Earlier today, Georgia Republican U.S. Congressman Graves’s who represents the 9th and soon the new 14th District stated that he could not vote for this bill.
Graves said, “The Senate fiscal cliff bill offers no commitment to debt reduction, only a demand from taxpayers to bailout Washington. As taxes rise, freedom diminishes. Without any spending reforms, the debt crisis continues. I cannot support a bill that protects Washington and promotes bigger government at the expense of my constituents and future generations.”
When the votes came in, Graves kept his word.
