The most popular – or commonly used – baby names have been announced for the past year, 2013. According to the United States Social Security Administration which keeps tabs on such things, the most popular boy’s name in the past year has been Noah, according to a Chicago Tribune report on Friday. On the girl’s side of being named, Sophia tops the list.

All told, there were 21, 075 baby girls named Sophia last year. On the boys’ side, 18,090 baby boys were named Noah. Continuing down the list of girls’ names, Emma came in a close second and Olivia followed close behind in third place. Continuing down the list of boys’ names, Liam came in second and Jacob came in third place.

Jacob took a hit this year. The name Jacob has topped the boys’ list for14 years in a row. However, after being the favorite boy’s name from 1999 to 2012, it slipped to number 3 this time around. In fact, with Noah becoming the favorite name to give a boy in the past year, it is the first time since 1960 that the most popular boy’s name hasn’t been Michael or Jacob, according to a CNN report on Friday.

Sophia has been the most popular girls name for three years now. It was the most popular in 2011 through 2013. Prior to Sophia being the most common girl’s name given, the most popular girl’s name was Isabella.

Over the past 100 years, according to the report, Michael has been the most popular boy’s name. It ranked number one for 44 times out of the century. As far as girls’ names are considered, Mary has been the most popular – or common – in the past century. Mary was the favorite 42 years out of the past 100 years.

The United States Social Security Administration releases the most popular names of the past year. It has been releasing the list annually since 1998. The date chosen to release the list has always been shortly before Mother’s Day.
