For a huge part of the continental United States, as well as San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland can expect to see temperatures closer to that of spring rather than winter. The latest Climate Prediction Center (CPC) temperature outlook for the next week and a half has most of the country in dark red indicating warmer than average temperatures. Most of California will continue to see warm sunny days for the majority of the next two weeks with very little variation in the temperature trend.
For San Francisco expect temperatures to top out around 60 degrees. In San Jose, where it is more sheltered from the Pacific, expect temperatures averaging in the mid to upper 60’s the next few weeks. Normally this time of year, in San Francisco we see high temperatures in the upper 50’s and in San Jose around 60 degrees… weather models are predicting temperatures to be 5 to 7 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.
Why is this happening? The jet stream as I have mentioned previously in past articles, continues to stay north of California, over the Pacific Northwest, Seattle-Vancouver region with occasional dips- these dips usually bring rain such as the system that moved through this past weekend, and our next shot of rain on Tuesday. The jet stream also remains mostly zonal and weak for most of the country, which is preventing any cold air from funneling down from Canada and the Arctic.
