When evaluating floral arrangements or floral designs, the important point based on which people evaluate are different from person to person. Some people consider the overall balance of decoration to be the most important evaluating factor. Some say the important point is to what kind of extent a floral designer pays attention to details in floral decoration. Or some other people say the color coordination is the most important evaluation factor.
Although this is nothing but a personal opinion, generally speaking it looks like there are similarities in the way of evaluating floral arrangements between European and Japanese floral artists. In both Europe and Japan, they give priority to detail oriented beauty and elegance in designs.
Floral designers in Europe and Japan do not make unnecessary big size of floral decorations and in most cases the arrangements they make are medium to small scale in its size. If the size is relatively small, they usually pay very precise attention to details of each element in decoration. Of course depending upon the situation and type of event, they sometimes make even a large scale floral arrangement. But generally speaking again, the size they like is not so big seemingly because of limited space available in homes and offices. In this sense it is a little bit different from typical floral decorations found in the United States where most people prefer pretty large scale and dynamic decorations.
Getting back to European floral arrangements, especially in England, France and Italy, the size is much smaller (in every sense) than in Germany, Netherlands and Scandinavian countries. Needless to say it is much smaller than things in the United States. In Scandinavian countries, Germany and Netherlands as well as the United States, even the size of people are pretty big. So many reasons and factors give influence on the size of floral arrangements.
Also European people has been keeping their sophisticated and refined artistic sense for the past long period of time regarding not only floral arrangements but also general arts-crafts and fine art as well. So such traditional cultures have been affecting even fashions and apparel industries in European countries.
Floral arrangement is one of most popular arts in Europe and Japan among so many types of arts. Therefore if they make detail oriented job on their general arts with elegant touch, it is obvious that floral arts is heavily influenced by such methodology.
The bottom line is artists in Europe and Japan work with detail oriented craftsmanship, which helps make floral arrangements very refined and sophisticated.
